A funeral Mass was held Wednesday, Feb. 3 at St. James Catholic Church in Conway.
Burial, with military rites, will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Conway.

He met Wanda Jones while stationed in Sweet Water, Texas, and the couple returned to Breckenridge where they were married Oct. 18, 1945. Joe and Wanda raised their five children and lived in Breckenridge until his retirement as a foreman for the city, at the water treatment plant. Many will remember Joe from working at Mehl’s Plant Center in Breckenridge with his brother, Ben. After retiring in 1985, the couple moved to Conway.
Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Breckenridge, and St. James Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening, maintaining his meticulously manicured lawn and spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren and their children.
Surviving are: four daughters, Phyllis (Roger) Herding of Bowie, Md., Susan (Harvey) Andel of Breckenridge, Sandie (Tom) Schillinger of Britton, S.D., and Teri (Jon) Dalager of Lexington, Ky.; one son, David (Mary) Mehl of Nichols, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are: his beloved wife, Wanda (1989); his sister, Catherine Comstock; brothers, Ed, George, Bill, Bob and Ben.
