Science Taught by Artists Reaching Students (S.T.A.R.S.) is the program the grant will go to support. It's a program to teach arts to the youth — in particular astronomy.
Three American Indian traditional artists will collaborate with astronomer Dave Weinrich from Minnesota State University Moorhead planetarium to lead the workshop for enrolled student at Circle of Nations.

"She's just an amazing person, I've heard her talk," Youngbird said. "Her stories help teach morals and values."
Richard LaFromboise, Ojibway traditionalist, is one of the few individuals remaining known as "keeper of the scrolls." He is scheduled to visit in April. LaFromboise's exhibit features birch bark scrolls with stories scribed onto them. Youngbird has tried to get LaFromboise on the campus through other grants but has been unsuccessful. It's been more than 19 years of trying so Youngbird is excited for his stories to teach students lessons of virtue.
"I think it's really important for our kids to get a new perspective," Youngbird said.
The third artist is Keith Bear, storyteller and musician, who will speak to the students reflecting wisdom of American Indian ancestors and respect for the earth. Youngbird said Bear will have a two week residency on the campus and work closely with the students, even helping them make flutes.
"Everything ties in with the stars and astronomy," Youngbird said of the workshop overall.
The workshop will culminate with a group field trip to the MSU-Moorhead campus planetarium in the spring. Youngbird said periodically during the school year students may be visiting the planetarium to proceed with the program's curriculum.
