Without their top scorer for much of the first half, the Wahpeton girls’ basketball team was still able to recover, beating Valley City 80-52 at home Tuesday.

Lexi Braun picked up two quick fouls in the first five minutes and was sent to the bench. The rest of the Huskies struggled at first, but managed to get things going on their own.

In the second half, the Huskies upped their defense and got things going offensively as Braun returned to the floor. She finished with 23 points despite playing limited minutes. “Our defensive intensity was better in the second half,” head coach Rod Breuer said. Wahpeton also shot well, going 12-16 from the free throw line.

In order to keep up with their success, Breuer believes his team must come out strong and play consistently throughout the entire time. “We’ve got to come out and play 36 minutes and come up with the same intensity throughout the whole game,” he said.

Wahpeton’s scoring was balanced Tuesday. Braun led her team, followed by Taylor Albrecht who had 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. Michelle Rossow had 13 and Kayla Meyer and Jenny Anderson each added 11. “We’re more and more balanced on the floor,” Breuer said. “We need to keep everybody involved.”

The Huskies travel to Devils Lake on Saturday, Jan. 12 and are back at home on Tuesday, Jan. 15 to face Fargo Shanley.
