In their first home game of the season, the Wahpeton girls’ basketball team knew they would have to play well early on to stop a tall, solid Milbank, S.D. team.

Wahpeton’s Jenny Anderson hit four three-pointers in the Huskies’ first home game of the season Tuesday against Milbank, S.D. Though Wahpeton played hard in the second half, they fell 63-50. Daily News photo by Kristin Anderson.

Rod Breuer’s team played hard, but fell 63-50, led by Lexi Braun’s 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Milbank’s 6-foot-1-inch Amber Wollschlager came out strong, scoring the Bulldog’s first 14 points to take an early 14-7 lead.

The Huskies then got their offense going as Jenny Anderson heated up at the three-point line. As Wollschlager and Milbank dominated inside, Wahpeton kept their outside game going as they hit shots around the perimeter. The score was 34-25 at halftime.

In the locker room during the break, Breuer stressed to his team that they would have to step up if they were going to stay competitive in the game. “We talked about picking up defensive intensity,” Breuer said.

His team did just that, led by Braun’s power under the basket as the Huskies forced turnovers and hustled up and down the court. After back-to-back three-pointers by Anderson, Wahpeton was within five points and their momentum was up.

As Wollschlager went out with an injury with just over six minutes left in the game, the Huskies tried to take control. Though their defense stayed strong, the Huskies could not overcome their deficit and took their first loss of the season.

“We saw some of the things we need to work on, but we saw some good things,” Breuer said. He admits it was positive for the Huskies to face a good team early in the season. “It’s good to play a good, solid team to see what we’ve got,” he said. “We played hard; the girls didn’t give up.”

The Huskies’ next game is on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at West Fargo. They are back at home on Tuesday, Dec. 18 to take on Grand Forks Central at 7:45 p.m.
